The Bergepanzer 3 A0A2 "Büffel" (Buffalo) is the most modern sub-version within the original A0 series of the Bundeswehr's main battle tank recovery vehicle based on the Leopard 2 chassis. Unlike the later A1 variants, the A0A2 deliberately dispenses with additional protection modules or a remotely controlled weapon station. Instead, the focus of this version is on a functionally oriented increase in combat effectiveness, retaining proven systems but implementing targeted technical and ergonomic improvements.
One of the key innovations of the A0A2 version is the completely redesigned stowage concept on the engine deck. The equipment carrier of the Bergepanzer 3 A1 was adopted and adapted, resulting in significantly improved storage options for recovery equipment, tools, and special accessories. The new configuration is modular, more accessible, and offers clear separation for different types of equipment – a major advantage in practice, especially during demanding recovery operations under time pressure. The stability and attachment of the equipment containers have also been improved to increase safety when driving at high speeds or over rough terrain.
A rear-view camera system has also been integrated. This system is mounted in a protected housing at the rear of the vehicle and provides the driver with a significantly better overview when reversing via an interior display. This innovation not only increases maneuverability in urban or tight terrain, but also improves safety during recovery and loading.
Despite these technical updates, the A0A2 remains largely unchanged from the original model: no additional armor, no FLW200, no mine protection reinforcements – making it significantly lighter and more mobile than the heavier A1 versions. The proven recovery functions – including the hydraulic 30-ton crane arm, the cable winch with up to 70 tons of deflection force, and the dozer blade for terrain preparation and stabilization – have been retained, with only slight improvements in their control and maintainability.
