Founded in the 1930s, North American is best known for the development and manufacture of the P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft.
However, the company made a name for itself with its first achievement, the single-engine trainer aircraft, originally known as the NA-16, which was further developed and eventually became an all-metal machine with retractable landing gear.
The type was produced in many different versions during the war and in the post-war years.
The USAAF designated the type as the AT-6 Texan, while in the US Navy and Marines it was known as the SNJ.
The type was used throughout the world both during the war and after its end.
For the Commonwealth, the Texan was produced as Harvard Mk.I to Mk.IV.
In Canada, the Noorduyn company built the Harvard Mk.IIB under licence.
The different Texan versions differed mainly in their armament, equipment and the shape and frame of the canopy.
