The Leopard 2A4 is the most numerous and widely distributed early production version of the German Leopard 2. Deliveries to the Bundeswehr began in 1985, and it served as the army's standard main battle tank for many years. Additionally, older Leopard 2A0 through A3 models were largely upgraded to the A4 standard. The A4 variant is particularly significant as it represents the culmination of the original Leopard 2 development line, featuring the characteristic angular turret. It was not until the introduction of the Leopard 2A5 in the 1990s that the distinctive wedge-shaped add-on armor on the turret appeared.

The Leopard 2A4 only entered service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces following the start of the full-scale Russian invasion. This marked a remarkable phase in the history of the Leopard 2: for the first time, the tank was deployed in a major conventional war against an adversary equipped with extensive artillery, anti-tank weaponry, mines, and drones.

The Ukrainian Leopard 2A4s came from various sources and therefore exhibited differing details. Consequently, there is no single, standardized "Leopard 2A4 Ukraine." A former Polish Leopard, for instance, may differ in details from a Canadian Leopard 2A4CAN, a Norwegian vehicle, or a Leopard reactivated from long-term Spanish storage.
