The G7117 1.5-ton 4x4 Repair Truck belonged to the large Chevrolet G506 family of vehicles used by the US Army during World War II. These medium-duty, all-wheel-drive trucks were produced in large numbers starting in 1940 and served as universal transport and support vehicles for the American armed forces. The G506 series included numerous variants – among them cargo trucks, tankers, workshop vehicles, wreckers, and specialized bodies. The G7117 was equipped with a front-mounted winch for the field workshop version ("Repair Truck").

In its original configuration, the vehicle was designed as a mobile repair shop. These vehicles transported tools, spare parts, welding equipment, compressors, fuel tanks, and technical equipment to repair damaged vehicles directly near the front lines. This type of vehicle played a crucial role, especially for the highly mobile American units, because it could quickly resolve breakdowns and ensure the mobility of mechanized units. The G7117 saw service in both Europe and the Pacific, and through the Lend-Lease program, it also reached Allied forces such as Great Britain and the Soviet Union.

Technically, the vehicle was based on the Chevrolet G506 1.5-ton chassis with selectable four-wheel drive and an inline six-cylinder engine. Its robust construction, ease of maintenance, and good off-road capability made it one of the most important American standard trucks in its weight class. A characteristic feature of the repair truck was its box-shaped workshop body with shelving, tool racks, and extensive equipment.
