This formation is named after the Kwantung territory, established by the Qing Dynasty in 1898. In this context, Kwantung means "east of the Shanghai Pass."
The army was officially formed and stationed in 1906, after Japan regained the Kwantung territories from the Russians following the Russo-Japanese War.
