When British Mark I tanks first appeared on the Somme in 1916, the German soldiers were often defenseless and tried to deal with them using a variety of improvised means. Later, a special steel-core armor-piercing 7.92 mm “K” bullet was developed; Cartridges with these bullets were henceforth included in the ammunition of the MG 08 machine guns.
In November 1917, the German army command commissioned the Mauser company to develop a special weapon - the Mauser M1918 tank rifle (T-rifle). It was the world's first anti-tank rifle designed exclusively to combat armored targets. It was a single-loader weapon that was used by a two-person operating crew, had a caliber of 13.2 mm and weighed 17.7 kg. This weapon was capable of penetrating a 26 mm thick steel plate at a distance of 100 meters and an 18 mm thick plate at a distance of 500 meters.
At the front, special anti-tank units began to be set up, which were equipped with anti-tank rifles and machine guns. Anti-tank rifles were typically positioned in groups of four to six along the main line of defense or immediately behind it. Machine guns were often placed in camouflaged positions to provide flank fire.
For effective use of the anti-tank rifles, it was recommended to concentrate fire on the driver's position as well as on the fuel tanks, while machine gun fire was directed at the viewing slits of the armored vehicles.
