At the beginning of World War I, Germany implemented the Schlieffen Plan – a strategy for a rapid advance through Belgium to Paris with the goal of encircling and capturing the French capital from the west. The plan was initially successful and placed France in a critical position. However, as the campaign progressed, it became clear that the German army did not have enough troops to complete the encirclement of Paris. The German High Command then changed its strategy, shortened the attack route, abandoned the planned bypass of Paris, and shifted troops eastward toward the Marne.

France and Great Britain responded decisively by concentrating their forces in this vulnerable sector and assembling an Allied force almost twice the size of the advancing German armies. Their powerful counterattack forced the Germans to stretch their lines while simultaneously maneuvering along the front. As gaps appeared in the German formations, French and British units quickly exploited these weaknesses to advance into the open areas.

This pressure ultimately forced the Germans to withdraw, marking the complete failure of the Schlieffen Plan, which was designed for a quick victory on the Western Front. This unexpected Allied triumph later became known as the "Miracle of the Marne."
