The town of Bastogne was strategically important because several major roads converged there. German troops surrounded the town, trapping American units, primarily the 101st Airborne Division.
Despite the cold, supply shortages, and intense pressure, the American troops refused to surrender. When the Germans demanded their surrender, General Anthony McAuliffe famously replied, "Nuts!"
The trapped troops held out for several days until units under General George S. Patton broke through and relieved Bastogne on December 26.
The defense of Bastogne is considered a turning point in the offensive and a symbol of Allied resistance.
