The Granatwerfer 42 was a copy of the Soviet regimental mortar 120 mm Polkovoi Minomjot obr. 1938.
In order to compensate for the Wehrmacht's weakness in heavy grenade launchers during the war against the Soviet Union, the Soviet mortar was rebuilt.
