The so-called US military "8-ft Storage Containers" were not a single standardized design, but rather early standardized steel containers used by the US Army, which emerged from the late 1940s onward due to the need for more efficient logistics. From precursors such as the "Transporter" system, the CONEX container developed in the early 1950s: a robust, stackable steel container with uniform external dimensions (typically in an 8-foot grid), which could be quickly moved by crane or forklift and transported supplies safely and protected from the elements.

From the Korean War onward, and especially during the Vietnam War, these containers saw widespread use in combat and had a lasting impact on military supply. They transported ammunition, spare parts, rations, and equipment directly to the operational area and were often left there permanently, thus evolving into a flexible infrastructure in the field. Beyond their traditional storage function, they were increasingly improvised and systematically repurposed: as mobile shops or supply points, they served to distribute spare parts, clothing, or rations, often directly at the front lines. They were also repurposed as accommodations by being equipped with insulation, beds, and ventilation systems, thus serving as simple but protected quarters.

Furthermore, they were used as command and communication stations, equipped with radios, map boards, and planning tables to enable mobile command posts near the front lines. Workshops for repairs or specialized technical tasks were also created within these containers. This versatility transformed the 8-foot containers into a kind of modular infrastructure building block in the field, extending far beyond mere storage and significantly shaping modern container logistics and mobile military base concepts.
