The Bailey Bridge is a portable, prefabricated bridge.
It was developed by the British for military purposes in 1940–1941 and was used extensively by British, Canadian, and American engineer units.
The advantage of a Bailey bridge is that its construction requires neither special tools nor heavy equipment.
The wooden and steel bridge elements were small and light enough to be transported on trucks and lifted into place by hand without the need for a crane.
These bridges were strong enough to support tanks.
Bailey bridges are still widely used today in civil engineering and as temporary crossings for pedestrians and vehicles.
