Although the US Navy's technical experts, when first commissioned, considered this aircraft unsuitable for use on aircraft carriers.
The Corsair achieved many outstanding aerial victories. In the Pacific Ocean alone, the F4U shot down over 2,000 Japanese aircraft, with a loss of only 189 Corsairs, resulting in a kill/loss ratio never equaled in history.
This aircraft was produced for ten years until December 1952, making the Corsair the American aircraft that remained in production longest after World War II.
The F4 was also used extensively by French naval aviation during the War in Indochina and the 1956 Suez Campaign.
