The Boeing CH-46 "Sea Knight" helicopter served faithfully with the US Navy and US Marine Corps from the early 1960s onwards. Key missions for this proven aircraft within the Navy (specifically the H-46D variant) included combat logistics support, vertical replenishment (VERTREP), search and rescue operations, and special operations. The CH-46 "Sea Knight" was one of the largest helicopters in the US Navy's inventory. It featured a tandem-rotor configuration, was powered by two turbine engines, and was flown by a crew of two pilots. Its maiden flight took place in August 1962, and it entered service in 1964. The "Sea Knight's" unique tandem-rotor design provided enhanced maneuverability and excellent flight characteristics—even in strong relative winds from any direction—enabling rapid changes of heading during low-speed maneuvers.
Thanks to these capabilities, millions of tons of cargo and thousands of passengers were transported safely, efficiently, and smoothly over the years.
