The Do 17 was originally designed as a transport and mail aircraft, but Lufthansa rejected it on the grounds that the fuselage was too slim and unsuitable for carrying passengers.
The Luftwaffe, however, showed interest in the aircraft and so a modified Do 17 V-4 prototype was created.
It was a twin-engine high-wing aircraft.
Series production of the Do 17 E-1 (bomber version) and Do 17 F-1 (reconnaissance version) began in 1936.
