On April 14, 1941, the first Messerschmitt Bf109E/TROP arrived at Ain el Gazala airfield in North Africa. While transported to Sicily, where their aircraft had been tropicalized, JG 27 had briefly conducted missions in the Balkans. Tropization included fitting a dust filter over the compressor's air intake and providing emergency desert survival equipment, including a carbine.
