- Kawasaki Ki-61 II Kai Prototype
The first prototype of the Ki-61 took off in December 1941, and tests of other prototypes were carried out throughout 1942. Mass production of these aircraft began at the end of 1942, and they did not reach military units until early 1943.
In the autumn of the same year, armament was increased, and during the war further improvements and the production of modernized modifications took place.
The Ki-61 earned the respect of the Allies in battles for New Guinea, the Philippines, Taiwan and Okinawa.
They formed part of Tokyo's anti-aircraft defenses, but were not enough to counter the B-29 flying fortress.
In total, 3078 machines of all versions were produced.
