The Ki-61 Hien /Type 3/ was the only Japanese fighter aircraft powered by a water-cooled inline engine. It entered service in the summer of 1943 and was used in the battles for New Guinea, the Philippines, Okinawa and also in the defense of the Japanese islands.
Over 3000 of all variants were produced in total. The Ki-61 I Otsu was the second variant, with two Ho-103 12.7 mm machine guns replacing the 7.7 mm machine guns of the first version.
The retractable skid was replaced by a fixed one.
