A total of 15,683 units of this fighter aircraft were built during World War II.
Originally conceived as an interceptor, the P-47 later proved to be an outstanding combat aircraft for both bomber escort and ground-attack missions. It was characterized by immense structural ruggedness and a massive radial engine that withstood damage better than the engines of other aircraft.
The P-47D was the main production variant; 6,315 units were manufactured. The aircraft was powered by a version of the 2,000 hp R-2800 engine featuring water injection, enabling a top speed of 433 mph (approx. 697 km/h) at an altitude of 30,000 feet (approx. 9,144 m). P-47 models prior to the D-25 version became known as "Razorbacks."
