Perhaps the most famous action of the North American B-25 Mitchell occurred shortly after 8 a.m. on April 18, 1942, when sixteen of the bombers took off from the relatively short deck of the USS Hornet and headed for Japan.
This bold and heroic attack was intended as a blow to the heart of the Japanese Empire, which had attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, and illustrated the resolve of the American people and the determination of its forces to strive for victory.
The early B-25B aircraft used in the Doolittle Raid performed well, but had already been modernized.
