The Barracuda shoulder-wing aircraft was equipped with large Youngman flaps on the rear trailing edge of the wings and had an unusual, L-shaped main landing gear that retracted to the side of the fuselage.
Carrying torpedo or bomb armament, it could attack enemy ships.
These could be delivered in both level flight and in a dive at an angle of up to 70 degrees.
The Barracuda was equipped with an ASV-IIN radar and was also used for long-range reconnaissance missions. Although originally designed as a torpedo bomber, torpedoes were rarely used in Norwegian waters. Barracudas were primarily used as dive-bombers and participated in the landings in Italy and in several raids on the Tirpitz (initially with the US 1600 lb AP bombs).
Until the end of the war in Europe, Barracudas attacked German ships in Norwegian waters from both ground bases and aircraft carriers, and also conducted anti-submarine warfare operations.
