The Nanchang CJ-6 is a Chinese-designed and built aircraft for the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) as a basic trainer.
The CJ-6 is not a Chinese version of the Yakovlev Yak-18A.
The prototype was powered by a Czech-built horizontally opposed engine, but flight tests revealed that more power was needed.
As a result, it was replaced with a domestically produced version of the Soviet AI-14P 260 hp radial engine, the Housai HS-6, along with a matching propeller.
With this modification, the CJ-6 was approved for mass production.
With a total production run estimated at over 3,000 aircraft, CJ-6s were delivered for PLAAF training and for export to countries such as Albania, Bangladesh, Cambodia, North Korea, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka.
