The Shenyang J-8II is visually quite different from the original J-8.
It features a new forward fuselage, intakes, and nose structure more reminiscent of the F-4 Phantom II or the Sukhoi Su-15, and houses a new, more powerful radar.
The J-8B made its first flight in November 1989; the improved J-8II was equipped with the JL-8A PD radar (70 km range).
Powered by two WP-13AII turbojet engines, it is armed with a 23 mm twin Type 23-III cannon and up to four PL-5 or PL-8 anti-aircraft missiles or rockets/bombs.
