The Grumman F9F Panther was the manufacturer's first jet fighter and the US Navy's second.
Its maiden flight took place in 1947. It was powered by a Rolls-Royce Nene jet engine, manufactured under license by Pratt & Whitney as the J42. Since there was insufficient space in the fuselage and wings for the fuel required by the thirsty engine, permanently installed auxiliary tanks were fitted to the wingtips.
F9F-3: A version equipped with the Allison J33 engine, produced as a backup in case of J42 engine failure; 54 units were built. All were later retrofitted with the J42 engine. Length: 11.3 m, wingspan: 11.6 m, height: 3.8 m, weight: empty: 4,220 kg, max. takeoff weight: 7,462 kg, top speed: 925 km/h, range: 2,177 km.
