The Grumman F9F Panther was the manufacturer's first jet fighter and the US Navy's second.
Its maiden flight took place in 1947.
It was powered by a Rolls-Royce Nene turbojet, built by Pratt & Whitney under license number J42.
Since there was insufficient fuel space in the wings and fuselage for the fuel-efficient jet, fixed fuel tanks were installed at the wingtips.
F9F-2B: Version with underwing mounts for bombs and rockets.
All F9F-2s were eventually modified in this way.
