The Corsair was adopted by the United States Air Force and the Air National Guard to replace the A-1 Skyraider, F-100 Super Sabre, and F-105 Thunderchief.
The aircraft was also exported to Greece in the 1970s and to Portugal and Thailand in the late 1980s. The A-7's design was based on Chance Vought's successful supersonic F-8 Crusader.
It was one of the first fighter jets to feature a head-up display, an inertial navigation system (INS), and a turbofan engine.
TA-7C: Two-seat trainer version for the U.S. Navy; 24 converted A-7Bs and 36 A-7Cs were built. In 1984, 49 aircraft, including the eight EA-7Ls, were refitted with new TF41-A-402 engines and upgraded to the A-7E standard.
