Arguably the best Allied fighter of WWII, the Mustang was chosen as the USAF's primary fighter after the war.
All other types were relegated to secondary roles or retired from service.
When the USAF aircraft were renamed in 1948, P for Pursuit became F for Fighter, making the P-51D Mustang an F-51D.
