The last of the Marine Furies was the FJ-4.
Some claim the FJ-4 was the best version of the entire F-86 Sabre/FJ Fury series.
At first glance, the FJ-4 appears to be a modified F-86 Sabre, which first flew in 1947.
However, closer inspection reveals numerous differences, and only its relationship to the F-86 family is readily apparent.
Development of the FJ-4 began in June 1953 as the company project NA-208, which envisioned two prototypes, and as the production version NA-209.
The Navy required a top speed of Mach 0.95 and a combat altitude of 49,000 feet—requirements that had not previously been met without afterburners.
