Although it was a development of the straight-winged F-84 Thunderjet, the F-84F was essentially a new design conceived to compete with North American Aviation's F-86 "Sabre."
The "F" model differs from the "C" model by featuring 40-degree swept wings, swept tail surfaces (vertical and horizontal stabilizers), a smaller cockpit canopy, and a redesigned windscreen.
Its maiden flight took place in November 1952; however, the "F" model arrived too late to see service in the Korean War. Some "Thunderstreaks" did, however, see combat action while serving with the French armed forces during the 1956 Suez Crisis.
