The F-111 Aardvark was developed by General Dynamics as an all-weather, multirole aircraft.
It originated from the US Navy's need for a long-range interceptor and the USAF's need for a fighter-bomber in the 1960s.
However, since the Navy versions failed, the project was discontinued as a pure combat aircraft.
The F-111 was a two-seat, twin-engine, variable-sweep wing aircraft.
Its maiden flight took place on December 21, 1964. The first production aircraft were delivered on July 18, 1967.
A total of 563 F-111s were built.
The F-111A is an early variant of the F-111 family; 158 examples were built.
