The ASMP program was launched in 1978 to provide an optimized medium-range air-to-surface missile for the future Mirage 2000N.
It was decided to convert 18 Mirage IVA models into IVP models, a so-called penetration version capable of carrying the CT52 detection container equipped with cameras and infrared heat detectors, until the new bomber came into service.
The first operational squadron at Mont-de-Marsan was equipped on 1 May 1986 with the new supersonic missile with a nuclear warhead, which can also be equipped with a conventional warhead to be used as a deterrent.
