Grumman A-6E TRAM Intruder

The Grumman A-6 Intruder was developed as the successor to the A-1 Skyraider. It was the US Navy's first all-weather combat aircraft. Prior to 1962, the aircraft bore the designation A-2F, receiving the new designation A-6 Intruder upon entering service. Thanks to its outstanding all-weather capabilities, the A-6 quickly became the primary attack aircraft for the Navy and Marine Corps and saw action during the Vietnam War.
From 1979 onwards, all A-6E Intruders were equipped with the AN/ASS-33 detection and ranging system (part of the TRAM system). This was housed in a small turret beneath the radome. The A-6E TRAM participated in most Navy military operations during the latter part of the century. All Intruders were replaced by the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet in 1997.
