It is the first all-weather attack aircraft of the US Navy. Prior to 1962, the aircraft was designated A2F and received the new designation A-6 Intruder upon entering service.
Due to its outstanding all-weather capabilities, the A-6 quickly became the primary attack aircraft of the Navy and Marine Corps and saw action in the Vietnam War.
The A-6As were equipped with the DIANE system, the most advanced navigation/targeting system at the time. However, reliability issues were resolved after a few years.
480 A-6As were built, and 47 of them were converted to a different type.
