The A-10 is a versatile, high survivability aircraft popular with pilots for its "get home" effectiveness. The aircraft's mission is ground attack on tanks, armored vehicles and installations, as well as close air support of ground troops. The aircraft is suitable for use from forward air bases and has short takeoff and landing times. The aircraft has a long range (800 miles) and endurance and can linger in the combat area. Low-speed and low-altitude maneuverability (below 1,000 feet) allows accurate and effective targeting and weapons firing over all types of terrain. The first flight of the A-10 took place in May 1972 and since then a total of 715 aircraft have been produced. Originally manufactured by Fairchild, the A-10 has been the prime contractor for the A-10 since 1987, with Northrop Grumman providing support and structural improvement programs for the Integrated Systems and Aerostructures divisions in New York and St. Augustine, Florida. Over 350 A-10 aircraft are in service with the US Air Force and Air National Guard.
