Development began in 1938, the first flight took place on July 18, 1942, and it first appeared over Europe in 1944. A total of approximately 1,300 Me 262s were built, which shot down 509 Allied aircraft.
The Me 262 family had various roles, including light bomber, reconnaissance aircraft, heavy weapons carrier, and even experimental night fighter.
The Me 262 A-1b was identical in construction to the A-1a but was equipped with BMW 003 engines.
Only a few examples were built; two are known to exist at test sites. Its top speed was 800 km/h.
