Due to concerns about the enemy's new fighter aircraft, the German Luftwaffe issued requirements for new fighters. Dr. Kurt Tank's design ultimately led to the Fw 190, which by the end of 1943 was considered one of the best fighters of World War II.
The Fw 190's outstanding performance soon led to its replacement of the Messerschmitt Bf 109.
The Fw 190 D-11 was intended as the successor to the D-9. It was to be equipped with the Jumo 213F engine, and seven prototypes were built. The production version of the Fw 190 D-11 was to have no nose armament and be fitted with a new cockpit canopy as standard. However, due to delays in engine development, no aircraft were built before the end of the war.
