Due to concerns about the enemy's new fighter aircraft, the German Luftwaffe issued requirements for new fighters. Dr. Kurt Tank's design ultimately led to the Fw 190, which by the end of 1903 was considered one of the best fighters of World War II.
The Fw 190's outstanding performance soon led to the replacement of the Messerschmitt Bf 109.
The Fw 190D is the inline-engined model of the family, and the Type D-9 was the first aircraft of this series to see combat. The new engine made the Fw 190D-9 an excellent interceptor; to accommodate the inline engine, the fuselage is longer than the radial-engined model.
