The Messerschmitt Bf 109G, of which 23,500 were produced by the end of World War II, was the most widely manufactured variant of the Bf 109 series. Pilots noted that the increase in speed achieved by installing the more powerful DB 605 engine came at the cost of reduced overall handling.
