The Mitsubishi A5M (Japanese Navy Type 96) was the world's first monoplane fighter capable of operating from an aircraft carrier.
The A6M2b version was a further development of the Claude and featured a new Nakajima Kotobuki four-blade engine, an all-metal three-blade propeller, and a fully enclosed cockpit canopy (including fuselage modifications to integrate the engine and canopy).
Surprisingly, the enclosed canopy was not well-received by the pilots and was removed in the A5M4 version.
The A5M4 was the most advanced and final version of the Claude.
It was based on the A5M2b but retained the cockpit canopy, had a redesigned upper fuselage, a new Kotobuki 41 KAI engine, and a detachable fuel tank.
It remained in frontline service until 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor.
