- Grumman F4F-3S Wildcatfish
The Wildcat was the primary U.S. ship-based fighter upon entering World War II.
The F4F had a barrel-shaped design with angular wingtips and a rudder, and a narrow-track landing gear. It was well-armed and reliable, and ideally suited for carrier operations, as landing on a carrier deck was likely easier than landing on land. The F4F had no operational speed limit.
In this configuration, the F4F-3 was accepted by the U.S. Navy, and an order for 54 aircraft was placed in August 1939. After the first two aircraft, the cowling machine guns were removed and four 12.7 mm wing-mounted machine guns were fitted. Production aircraft were powered by the R-1830-76 engine. Most F4F-3s were unarmored and equipped with self-sealing fuel tanks.
This seaplane version of the F4F-3 was designed for use at forward island bases in the Pacific prior to the construction of airfields. Only one example was converted.
