The three-seat Grumman TBF-1 Avenger torpedo bomber, which made its maiden flight on August 1, 1941, entered service with the US Navy in June 1942, just in time for the Battle of Midway.
During World War II, the Avenger's design remained largely unchanged, allowing for mass production. Demand was so high that General Motors was also contracted to build the aircraft under the designation TBM-1, beginning in September 1942.
Over 1,000 TBF/TBMs (designated Avenger Mk I) were also used by the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Royal New Zealand Air Force also operated the Avenger.
The second important variant was the TBM-3, with reinforced wings that allowed for the carrying of rockets and radar pods.
