The FM-2 Wildcat was developed and built as a prototype by Grumman Aircraft.
Between 1943 and 1945, over 4,000 were manufactured by the Eastern Aircraft Division of General Motors. These aircraft featured a lighter airframe and a more powerful engine.
This resulted in a structural difference between the F4F and the FM-2.
The FM-2 had a taller vertical stabilizer to improve stability in the face of the engine's increased torque. Its armament consisted of four .50 caliber machine guns, two external bomb or fuel racks, and wing-mounted rocket launchers. These aircraft were primarily operated from escort carriers in support of ground operations in the Pacific Theater.
In the Atlantic, they were used in conjunction with Grumman Avengers for anti-submarine warfare.
