The Wildcat was the primary carrier fighter of the United States upon entering World War II.
The F4F had a barrel-shaped design with angular wingtips and a rudder, and a narrow-track landing gear. It was well-armed and reliable, making it ideally suited for carrier operations, as landing on a carrier deck was likely easier than landing on land.
The F4F had no operational speed limit.
The FM-1 was essentially an F4F-4 built by Eastern Aircraft in Linden, New Jersey.
There was one modification: the FM-1 had only four cannons, with an increased ammunition capacity of 430 rounds per cannon. This version of the Wildcat was primarily intended for escort carriers, as the F6F was replacing the F4F on fleet carriers.
