The F4U Corsair was an American World War II fighter aircraft distinguished by its characteristic bent wings (an inverted gull-wing design); this configuration allowed for the use of a 4-meter diameter propeller without requiring excessively long landing gear legs.
Its Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp engine generated 2,000 hp, giving the Corsair a top speed of 636 km/h. Among the various Corsair variants, the F4U-1 was the first mass-produced model; it featured a distinctive framed cockpit canopy known as the "Birdcage."
Deployed in the Pacific theater starting in February 1943, it was feared by Japanese forces due to its speed and firepower. A night-fighter version (F4U-2) was also developed, equipped with a radar pod near the right wingtip. In total, over 9,000 units were manufactured and operated by American, British, and New Zealand forces.
