The Wildcat was the primary US carrier-based fighter aircraft upon entering World War II.
The F4F had a barrel-shaped design with angular wingtips and a rudder, and a narrow-track landing gear. It was well-armed and reliable, making it ideally suited for carrier operations; landing on a carrier was likely easier than landing on land. The F4F had no operational speed limit.
The F4F's wings could be folded hydraulically. The US Navy ordered a total of 1,169 F4F-4s.
It replaced the F4F-3 by August 1942.
