Deliveries to the US Navy began in late 1944. Four months before the end of the war, the fleet was fully equipped. It was powered by a 2,100 hp engine.
By injecting a water-alcohol mixture into the cylinders, the power output increased to 2,450 hp.
The propeller was changed to a four-bladed propeller. The top speed increased to 721 km/h and the rate of climb to over 1,180 m/min, compared to 884 m/min for the F4U-1A.
The service ceiling also increased significantly from 11,000 m to 12,000 m.
The Corsair was also used in the Korean War.
