The Soviet LaGG-3 fighter, deployed at the beginning of World War II, suffered from inadequate flight performance due to its water-cooled inline engine. In the summer of 1942, a new variant with a powerful M-82 air-cooled radial engine entered series production.
This modification resulted in a redesigned airfoil and excellent flight characteristics.
The aircraft was designated the La-5 and marked the birth of the first version of the famous Lavochkin fighter.
