The An-2M featured a reinforced fuselage, a redesigned tail unit, and modifications to its equipment for agricultural operations. A distinctive feature was the large chemical or liquid tank housed within the fuselage, used for dispensing fertilizers or pesticides. However, the aircraft could also be utilized for transport and other utility tasks.
It was powered by a Shvetsov ASh-62IR nine-cylinder radial engine producing approximately 1,000 hp (735 kW). Like the original An-2, the An-2M was a single-engine biplane with fixed tailwheel landing gear. Its low minimum flying speed and excellent short-takeoff-and-landing (STOL) capabilities made it particularly well-suited for operations on short, unpaved airstrips.
Depending on the payload, the An-2M achieved a top speed of around 250 km/h and had a typical range of approximately 800–900 km. Its substantial payload capacity and simple, rugged construction made it a vital workhorse in Soviet agriculture. For modeling purposes, the An-2M is distinguished primarily by its agricultural equipment and modified fuselage section. Otherwise, it largely retains the familiar appearance of the An-2: a large fabric-covered biplane, a powerful radial engine with a Townend- or NACA-style cowling, fixed landing gear, and a distinctive, large vertical stabilizer.
