The first Su-27PU (T10PU-5) was overhauled and converted to serve as a development aircraft for the Su-30MKK. It first flew in its new guise on March 9, 1999.
The first prototype built by the KnAAPO ("501") flew on May 19, 1999 (sometimes February 20, 1999), and the second ("502," in a simple Chinese camouflage scheme, but designated simply as the Su-30MK rather than the MKK) followed later in 1999. "501" and "502" represent the planned production configuration, with Su-35-type high, flat tail fins, retractable in-flight refueling probes, and (according to some sources) Su-35-type radar domes. A total of 40 units were ordered for the PLA Air Force. The first batch of 10 was delivered from Komsomolsk to Nanjing on December 20, 2000, although the first aircraft was delivered in China in August 2000.
Chinese production of the "Flanker" model switched from the J-11 to the Su-30MKK after 80 aircraft were built.
