Development began in 1964, the prototype first flew on June 10, 1967, and was unveiled on July 9, 1967, during World Aviation Day flyovers at Domodedovo Airport in Moscow.
It was delivered to the Soviet Air Force in 1970.
Over 5,000 aircraft of the entire family were built before production ceased in the late 1980s. Large quantities were exported to countries outside the Soviet Union.
The early variants were designed to be used with high-speed missiles. The MiG-23ML Flogger-G prototype first flew in 1976, and production began in 1978.
