The MiG-21UM was the last two-seat version developed from the E-6 UM prototype.
It was virtually identical to a US aircraft with improved instrumentation and avionics to M and MF standards.
New ejection seats were installed: the KM-1U for the front cockpit and the KM-1I for the rear cockpit. Special features include the UHF antenna on the dorsal fin in front of the vertical fin, the attitude sensor on the nose cone, and the forward-facing instructor periscope on the rear canopy frame.
This folding periscope was installed to allow instructors to look straight ahead during takeoff and steer the aircraft if necessary.
